The New Zealand Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) is one of the Government’s key tools for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The ETS is being increasingly accessed by mandatory and voluntary participants, including the forestry sector. Often subject to reform and characterised by its complexity, navigating the ETS requires thoughtful consideration, especially as further changes are looming.

Join our comprehensive workshop, designed to help you understand the fundamentals of the ETS framework, what is under review, how forestry is managed within the ETS and the functioning of the New Zealand carbon market.

Who should attend?

The workshop is relevant for anyone with an interest or practical involvement in the ETS. You can attend the entire workshop, or individual sessions.

What will attendees get from the workshop?

By the end of this workshop, you will have a thorough understanding of the ETS. Our team of experts will guide you through how the framework operates, the industries most affected by this legislation, how to register and participate, as well as conduct that triggers offences/penalties. You will also be equipped with knowledge about how the ETS specifically impacts New Zealand's forestry sector. From a financial services perspective, you will gain insight into the New Zealand carbon market. Our experts will explain how auctions are structured in this space, what takes place when trading in the secondary market and the nature of market governance.

What will it cover?
Session one: ETS fundamentals

This session will provide an overview of the ETS, including:

  • the origins and purpose of the ETS;
  • fundamental working principles of the ETS (how it works);
  • who the ETS applies to and how to participate in the scheme;

  • recent and upcoming changes to the ETS, including pricing agricultural emissions.
Session two: Forestry in the ETS

This session will focus on the regulation of forestry in the ETS, and will cover:

  • the different types of forest land that can be registered in the ETS;
  • accounting methodologies for forestry and participant obligations;
  • recognising the impact of temporary adverse events; and
  • the process and requirements for emissions returns and transmissions of interest.
Session three: The New Zealand carbon market
