Ross is one of New Zealand’s leading commercial property and construction lawyers. He brings more than 35 years’ experience to his diverse property practice with a focus on commercial property, construction, projects and development.
Known for his commercial and affable approach, Ross has been the principal legal adviser on some of New Zealand’s’ significant land development and urban renewal projects. His portfolio includes forestry-oriented development, staged and mixed-use developments, and major commercial building and transportation projects.
Ross’s expertise extends across a broad spectrum of industries including building, forestry, education, health and ageing, transportation and energy. He advises on environmental issues and industry specific regulatory controls including the Resource Management Act, the Building Act and Overseas Investment Act compliance.
He’s widely recognised for his legal advice on all aspects of commercial property including property ownership, acquisition, divestments, title structures and commercial leasing. Ross is skilled in the development of strategic sites including providing investment structure, multi titled developments, and logistics facilities leasing.
Some of Ross’ long-standing clients include Southern Cross Hospitals Limited, Village Roadshow Limited, Westpac, on the development and lease of new $120 million New Zealand headquarters in Britomart, Fonterra, on a major road/rail logistics facility in Te Rapa, Ports of Auckland, and NZ Refinery on property/pipeline matters for jet fuel, diesel and petrol from Marsden Point to Wiri.
Helping PwC secure anchor tenancy in Commercial Bay
We acted for PwC on its deal with Precinct Properties that will see PwC be the anchor tenant of Commercial Bay, the new and landmark 38-storey office tower to be constructed in Auckland CBD. This was one of the highest value office leasing transactions in Auckland in recent times.
Acquisition of one of NZ’s largest forestry estates
Advised OneFortyOne Plantations Holdings on its acquisition of 100% of the shares in Nelson Forests Limited from Nelson Properties Limited. The transaction involved complex property issues, as the deal comprised of both freehold land and forestry rights from the Crown where the underlying land forms part of land being returned to Maori pursuant to a redress settlement process.
Black Birch Vineyard acquisition
Advised TIAA-CREF Global Agriculture II LLC and Global Ag Properties II New Zealand Limited Partnership on the real estate aspects of the acquisition of one of New Zealand’s most iconic vineyards.

Worked with Balle Bros, one of New Zealand’s largest players in the agricultural sector, on a number of high-value and complex matters spanning a range of property issues as they continue to grow and diversify.

Acted for the client on the sale of its fully-tenanted CBD office tower in the Auckland University precinct.
Transfer of settlement lands for Ngati Tuwharetoa (BOP)
Acted on transfer of settlement lands subject to CFL and Forestry Rights to Harvard, and addressing integrated forestry access network; wahi tapu rights; and coordination with adjoining Ngati Awa hapu.
Helping Westpac negotiate its new Head Office premises at Britomart
Acted for Westpac in negotiating its agreement to build and lease 18,000 square metres GFA for offices accommodating its new Head Office and Operations Centre in Office Towers in Briotmart Precinct Auckland.
