Nathalie is a corporate lawyer with experience advising clients on public, regulatory and international trade law matters.

She has particular expertise in the areas of sanctions, customs and excise law, import and export controls, anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations, domestic and overseas market access requirements, and international trade and investment agreements.

Nathalie is also a skilled provider of public law, regulatory and government relations advice, and is part of the firm’s Chambers Asia-Pacific Band 1 ranked Public Law team.

She assists private sector clients with complex, sensitive, and often high-profile public law matters, helping them understand legal requirements, conduct due diligence, capitalise on regulatory opportunities, participate effectively in regulatory investigations and public inquiries, present persuasively in disputes with decision-makers, and develop arguments and strategies that secure favourable legislative and policy changes.

Nathalie’s clients include Airwork, Amazon Web Services, ASB, Beef + Lamb New Zealand, Channel Infrastructure, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare, Fonterra, Lamb Weston, Masport, Meta, Pan Pac, Roof TG, Sanitarium, Sealord, UK Department for International Trade, Westpac, World Bank Group and Zespri.

Nathalie has strong cross-cultural communication skills and regularly uses her near native Chinese (Mandarin) language skills to benefit her clients. She is collaborative and strategic, working quickly to understand her clients’ commercial drivers. ;Nathalie is a Senior Solicitor who advises clients in the areas of public, regulatory and international trade law.

She has advised private sector clients on the interpretation and enforcement of a variety of free trade agreements (FTA), and recently advised the UK Government on its FTA negotiations with New Zealand. Nathalie has recent public law experience advising on Treaty of Waitangi matters, including in respect of corporate governance arrangements.

Nathalie has a strong interest in New Zealand’s connections across Asia and enjoys helping clients navigate the increasingly complex trade landscape. Nathalie is particularly interested in New Zealand-China trade issues. She is a near-native speaker of Mandarin Chinese, having spent several years living in China. She has assisted several exporting clients on Chinese Customs and other regulatory issues. Nathalie is a Next Generation Member of the New Zealand China Council and is an active member of the Asia New Zealand Foundation’s Leadership Network.

Career highlights

Advising banks, traders, investors, insurers, and freight companies on export controls and sanctions-related matters (and notably those relating to Russia, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Syria, and Venezuela). Also representing clients in contentious sanctions matters including Banking Ombudsman Scheme disputes, Human Rights Commission mediations, government investigations, and litigation (including representing the Respondent in Targa Capital Limited v Westpac New Zealand Limited [2023] NZHC 230.

Representing manufacturers, exporters and importers in anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations conducted by the New Zealand and United States governments. Most recently assisted Lamb Weston and Lamb Weston Meijer to secure the successful termination of New Zealand’s dumping investigation into frozen potato fries and wedges from Belgium and the Netherlands, and Roof Tile Group to secure the temporary suspension of anti-dumping duties on aluminium-zinc coated steel from the Republic of Korea.

Advising the United Kingdom Department for International Trade on the United Kingdom-New Zealand free trade agreement negotiations and the United Kingdom’s negotiations to accede to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. These ongoing appointments are for three years each and resulted from two separate competitive tender processes.

Advising traders and trade facilitators on complex customs and excise matters and representing them in contentious cases before the New Zealand Customs Service, the Ministry for Primary Industries, and the Environmental Protection Authority. Recently assisted a client to secure a reduction of a late-payment penalty by more than $200,000.
