We are looking for enthusiastic, well-rounded students with a broad range of interests. We look for students who have been successful academically and have strong communication skills. We are not looking for a certain 'type' of person - we want a diverse group of people with different life experiences, interests and perspectives. We also like candidates to have had a part time job (in any area) so that we know you have a strong work ethic and can manage your time effectively.

All you need to be studying is a Bachelor of Laws (Honours or a conjoint degree is not a requirement). Our programmes are open to all students from all schools and all universities, and regardless of whether you started university directly from school, after a gap year (or years) or after a different career. You can be assured that every application is treated equally.

While we are obviously interested in your law grades, we read your entire application (which includes your full academic transcript).

All we need from you is a cover letter (maximum one page), your CV and a copy of your university transcript (an unofficial copy is fine). Please note that the most impressive cover letters are those that are authentic (and not written by AI).

If you are in your penultimate (second to last) year at university, you should apply for our summer clerk programme. If you are earlier in your university studies (but you have completed at least two of the second year law papers), then our intern programme will be most suitable for you. And if you are in your final year at university, then you should apply for our law clerk programme.

Our summer clerks are our primary source of talent to fill our law clerk / graduate roles. Therefore, as well as giving you the opportunity to gain some practical legal experience in a top tier corporate law firm, it gives you the chance to secure permanent employment when you finish university.

We don't have a fixed number of summer clerks that we take each year. Numbers are decided on the strength of the applications and by balancing the number of clerks with the work that we have. However, we keep numbers relatively low to ensure that every summer clerk gets a good amount of quality legal work, and that everyone has the potential to join us permanently when they graduate from university.

We are committed to recruiting a number of summer clerks so that we can offer all summer clerks a law clerk position with us, providing both their individual performance and market conditions support this. We do not recruit an extremely large group of summer clerks and then have everyone competing for a smaller number of permanent graduate positions with us. While our summer clerks are not guaranteed a law clerk position for the following year, they remain our primary source of talent when filling our graduate roles. The clerkship is an opportunity for you to experience life in a top tier corporate law firm as well as enabling us to see what a great future law clerk you would make. For the past few years we have offered law clerk roles to all of our summer clerks.

Occasionally we may need to recruit additional law clerks outside of the main March-May annual recruitment round. Any opportunities will be advertised at the law schools and also advertised on the careers page of our firm's website.

We don't expect you to know very much at all - it is our job to teach you and provide the relevant support and training. What we do expect is for you to bring a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and the ability to take feedback on board.

Absolutely! Form your very first day in your new team you will be involved in real client matters. The type of work that you do will depend on what assistance your team's clients need at the time, but you will have exposure to a wide variety of meaningful and interesting work.

Our summer clerks spend their first week in an induction programme. Induction sessions include IT training, introductions to our different divisions and practice areas, Q&A sessions with previous summer clerks, workshops on enhancing research and delegation skills - basically everything you need to know to have a successful and fun summer clerking experience with us. You will also be given plenty of time to get to know the other summer clerks, your buddy and your team. During the course of your clerkship you will attend several training sessions with external providers including sessions to learn plain English writing, proofing and editing, effective listening, and developing presentation skills. All of these sessions will give you the tools you need to transition from university student to legal professional. You will also attend your team's training sessions to learn more about the practice area you are working in.

There are five practice divisions (each with a number of sub-teams) across our two offices; Banking and Financial Services; Corporate, which includes Competition, Intellectual Property, IT, International Trade, Private Wealth and Tax; Litigation, including Employment; Real Estate, including Environment; and Construction, including Energy. Each division is headed by a Division Leader, who is one of the partners in that division. During your clerkship, you will work with several partners, and senior lawyers, as well as having a junior solicitor assigned to you as your buddy.

You will get the chance to rotate through two teams over the summer, one each side of the Christmas break. At the end of each rotation you will get feedback on your performance and an opportunity to tell us about your experience in each team. Prior to your start date, you will be asked to let us know which practice areas you are most interested in and which teams you would like to work in over the summer. Wherever possible, we do our best to accommodate your preferences.

That's the great thing about being a summer clerk, it gives you a chance to try out a couple of different teams. We will send you an information pack about our divisions and teams to help you make this decision. However, if you really can't decide, we're happy to discuss this with you and make a decision together.

No, our law clerks don't rotate. When we offer law clerk positions, this will be for a position in a specific team so you will know which practice area you will be working in when you join us permanently after finishing University. Before deciding which team to place you in, we ask you to provide your team preferences and we make every effort to accommodate this.

Yes, our summer clerks enjoy a three-week paid break over the holiday period. This typically begins on or around Christmas Eve, and runs through early to mid-January. It's an opportunity to full switch off, enjoy time with friends and whānau, and come back refreshed for the remainder of the programme.

There are lots of great opportunities during the summer to get to know everybody in our firm, as well as your fellow summer clerks. Christmas is a fun time to be in our firm and social activities over the summer include Friday night drinks, sports tournaments, Social Club lunches and other events, team building events, Christmas parties, team social events, and various quizzes and competitions. There's always plenty going on!
