Richard is a commercial lawyer with particular expertise in technology, media and telecommunications law, intellectual property, commercial contracting and sport.

He advises clients on issues arising at all stages in the product lifecycle and is an expert legal draftsperson and troubleshooter.  Richard is sought after to help establish new ventures and to commercialise new technology both in New Zealand and overseas.

As well as his technology practice, with a background in commercial and IP law, Richard is recognised as a leading Sports and Events lawyer ranked as Band 1 by international research directory Chambers Asia Pacific. He has broad experience working with event hosts, sponsors and stakeholders to deal with issues arising in relation to major events in New Zealand.

Advised of companies on the development and deployment of its online real estate auction platform in New Zealand. This represented the entry of potentially disruptive technology into the New Zealand real estate market.

Australian Rugby League (ARL)

Assisted ARL and its lawyers in relation to New Zealand law aspects of its re-negotiation of ARL’s broadcasting rights to NRL, State of Origin and NRL Nines matches in New Zealand with Sky Network Television.

New Zealand Rugby Travel Ltd

Assisted with the renegotiation of its licensing arrangements with New Zealand Rugby and Air New Zealand in the sports travel sector.

World Masters Games 2017

Advised on commercial and consumer facing aspects of the World Masters Games 2017 including ticketing, participation terms, sponsorship, marketing and communications.  We also advise WMG on their internal operations, including employment related matters.

The Clubhouse (NZ) Ltd

Advised in relation to securing its LPGA sanction, sponsorship and funding for the McCayson New Zealand Women’s Golf Open.

Volvo Ocean Race (VOR)

Advises the VOR and its local delivery partner in relation to the delivery of several stopovers in the Volvo Ocean Race 2017/18 edition – Auckland, Melbourne and Hong Kong.

NZ Golf and NZ Association of Event Professionals (NZAEP)

Advise NZ Golf in relation to various activities in the commercial, sporting, events, technology and governance space. We also act for NZAEP in its governance and industry leadership role.
