Our Election 2026 Energy Policy Snapshot provides a comparison of the energy policies currently available for each of the main political parties, grouped by issue or topic.
Energy security and affordability will remain a hot topic this election and will be a priority issue for any future Government. All parties agree that New Zealand needs more secure and affordable electricity. Where they disagree, is what can be done to achieve those goals.
As our snapshot shows, there are areas of agreement across some parties on several issues:
- developing a national energy strategy;
- requiring new large-scale AI data centres to bring or build their own new renewable or firmed power;
- providing finance to help households install solar, batteries and/or make other electrification upgrades;
- enabling renters to access plug-in solar;
- supporting households and businesses to sell excess solar or battery power back to the grid; and
- working with industry and training providers to increase the energy workforce.
We have used each party's policy documents (see useful links below) as the official source for its positions and hyperlinked to other sources (e.g. news coverage or party’s public statements) where a party has not commented on a point in a consolidated policy document.
